BakBone Shared Virtual Tape Library (SVTL)

Shared Virtual Tape Library (SVTL)
With all of the benefits of a regular VTL, NetVault ®: Backup Shared Virtual Tape Library (SVTL) technology permits a variety of disparate operating systems to share the resource of a single VTL residing on a SAN-attached disk system.
A NetVault: Backup server and several smart clients can simultaneously write backup streams and access and restore data from a SVTL.
Improved Business Continuity
In the event of failure, disk-based backup provides rapid online data restores that can help get your data center and its mission-critical server and database applications back up and running faster than traditional tape backup. Restores are faster because:
- backup data can easily be recovered directly from a virtual or a real library, depending on media availability
- unlike competitive VTL solutions that direct-restore through one node, SVTL allows access to multiple nodes — so if a node is down or not available, the SVTL offers alternate client restore with direct access from disk
Alternate client restore, done directly from disk without using the LAN, is key to business continuity that enables improved regulatory compliance for Sarbanes-Oxley, Europe's Data Protection Act and Japan's HPB 517.
Increased Data Availability
NetVault®: Backup gives your administrators the best of both worlds by keeping offsite backups remote while retaining fresh backups on disk for ultra-fast restores.
Users can optimize for enhanced speed or cost by selecting from multiple SAN environments (Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet or iSCSI). They can also select the backup approach that best suits their environment — including full, Incremental, differential, or consolidated backup methods.
Lower Total Cost of Ownership
You will find that the NetVault ®: Backup Shared Virtual Tape Library (SVTL) technology supports a lower TCO in the following ways:
A shorter backup window
- minimizes the performance impact on mission-critical applications
- enhances overall operational efficiency
- increases the time available for production jobs
SVTL reduces hardware costs by minimizing the impact on tape drives of frequent stop/starts which wear down drives and stress the tape media — a source of potential errors.
Simultaneous backups from multiple data streams further enhance administrative productivity while reducing the learning curve involved since the SVTL operates just like a physical tape device.
Typically you must buy multiple disk units and then attach each disk unit to a distributed resource. SVTL uses a single centralized disk unit, improving disk utilization and resulting in major savings in:
- free space requirement
- management time
- energy consumption
System Requirements
- See NetVault: Backup system requirements. SVLT is not supported on Mac or HP-UX platforms.
